Topic 1专题一
1) The limits of Classical Epic will outline the essential information required for understanding the material and its context (no knowledge of Ancient Greek or Latin is required). 古典史诗的边界:概述理解该题材及其背景所需的基本知识(无需具备古希腊语或拉丁语基础)。
2) The form of Classical Epic will introduce students to the poetic form, sound and rhythm of the poetry. 古典史诗的形式:向学生介绍史诗的诗体形式、语音与韵律。
3) Epic narrative in the Greek world will introduce students to the Greek heroes, especially Achilles and Odysseus. 希腊世界的史诗叙事:向学生介绍希腊英雄,尤其是阿喀琉斯和奥德修斯。
4) Epic narrative in the Roman world will consider the nature of Vergil and Ovid’s contribution to the Epic tradition. 罗马世界的史诗叙事:探讨维吉尔与奥维德对史诗传统的贡献及其特质。

1) The theory of Classical myth will introduce students to the range and nature of the subject (and its relation to religion) and will include modern theory of myth and its context from a global point of view. 古典神话理论:向学生介绍该主题的范围与性质(及其与宗教的关系),并包含从全球视角出发的现代神话理论及其背景。
2) Myths of the cosmos will introduce students to the diverse Classical accounts of the nature of the universe’s beginning. 宇宙神话:向学生介绍关于宇宙起源本质的多种古典叙述。
3) Zeus and Olympus will trace the fundamental narrative of the ascent of Zeus/Jupiter from just another deity to the king of gods and the worldly political context in which such a narrative arose. 宙斯与奥林匹斯:追溯宙斯/朱庇特从众神之一上升为众神之王的根本叙事线索,以及这一叙事产生的现实政治背景。
4) Humans and demigods will introduce students to standard accounts of the origins of humanity and how the gods related to humans, sometimes resulting in extraordinary figures such as Dionysus, Hercules and Pan.人类与半神:向学生介绍关于人类起源以及神与人关系的传统叙述,并由此催生出狄俄尼索斯、赫拉克勒斯和潘神等非凡人物。
5) Thebes and Troy will focus on the two great wars of the Heroic Age which have passed down the vast majority of mythology that shaped much of the western imagination. 忒拜与特洛伊:聚焦英雄时代的两次伟大战争,围绕这两场战争流传下来的神话,构成了塑造西方想象力的大部分材料。。

Charles Weiss,哥伦比亚大学古典学学士、硕士,耶鲁大学古典学博士,剑桥大学副教授。现任剑桥大学圣凯瑟琳学院古典学学务主任。中山大学高级驻院学者、客座讲师。剑桥大学出版社与牛津大学出版社古典学类书籍特约审稿人。著有《Homer’s Odyssey》,合作编撰《Twenty-five years at Yale: Essays on the Classics in honor of Gordon Williams》。主要研究兴趣为古希腊和拉丁语言文学、古典修辞学、诗歌理论、文本细读以及古典文化在后世的接受与影响。
